ONE OF EACH

The chaos and squalor of her childhood home, hardly a home at all if home meant something more than a hard place to lay one’s head beside the head of another, whose head lay beside yet another—four children in each bed, the two beds in one room just wide enough to hold them—gave way before she was sixteen to the home of a husband. Older, a butcher. A tyrant. Only two in the bed now—and then, after a time, came two sons, twins, each of whom lay his lovely head on a bed of his lovely own. A luxury they would never, got tsu danken, know as one.
